Michael Douglas Dishes Life After Son Cameron Kicked Drugs In Prison

Michael Douglas is dishing on life after his son Cameron kicked drugs in prison.

The actor can finally exhale and enjoy life without worrying he will get a phone call his son is dead. It was a call Michael is all too familiar with. After all his brother Eric Douglas died of a drug overdose when he was only 46 years old.

In an interview with People magazine, Michael got real about Cameron’s addiction and their newfound relationship.

“It went from feeling cautious to relief, to the joy of having Cameron back. It’s like this huge storm has passed and the sun came out and you can enjoy your life again without looking over your back. It’s a wonderful feeling of being complete,” Michael admitted.

The 40-year-old struggled with drugs since he was a teenager. His drug problem got worse in his 20’s when Cameron became a full-blown cocaine and heroin addict. Sadly, several attempts by Michael and Cameron’s mother, Diandra, to help their son fell on deaf ears.

“It’s the sneaky power, the stranglehold that addiction has when you’re in the throes of it. When you get that far down the rabbit hole, there are a couple of options: there’s prison and then there’s death,” Cameron shared with the weekly magazine.

Today Cameron is using his own experience to help other addicts, as well as their family. He is also sharing his story in the upcoming memoir, Long Way Home, which he hopes can help even one person. Cameron also wants to set a good example for his 22-month-old daughter Lua, with long-time girlfriend, Viviane Thiebes.

The road to Cameron getting sober had an impact on the entire Douglas family. Michael admitted to shutting his son out at one point to protect himself and his other children. Thankfully father and son have found a way to repair their broken relationship.

Michael shared he and his oldest child are enjoying an incredibly close bond.

“I’m very proud of him, not only for the book but for the way he conducts his life. He’s talking the talk and walking the walk,” the Fatal Attraction star shared.

Cameron Douglas and his famous father Michael Douglas are putting the spotlight on addiction. Not only are they gracing the cover of People magazine with their story, but the entire Douglas family is sitting down with Diane Sawyer next week.
